I now find myself at the end of a work career spanning 48 years, and some of these years have been eventful and even rewarding. Predominately in ICT, as well as some consulting work on energy efficiencies, and a bit of commercial and residential property management (all my own).
I am also back in the home-town I left 44 years ago, from a commitment that the only way to see Adelaide, Sth Australia, is in the revision mirror. Well, Covid dealt me a mixed hand of cards and I returned to Adelaide in 2020. And not as a mass murderer as I once proposed at David Walker’s dinner party (ask David for further details).
It’s good, it’s homely although a little quiet – but I’m working on that.
I have been re-acquainted with one of my earlier passions – motorcycling. There are few cities that have a better set of hills riding, within 20 minutes of home, than Adelaide. I breakfast weekly in Lobethal on Wednesdays (that’s a 105 km ride) and Cudlee Creek on Sundays (160 km). Plus there are a couple of long distance bike safaris each year, which adds a few 100’s km
Also South Australians go camping a great deal, as do we. We have very slick slide-on camper unit and head to the bush often. I also have a casual sales job at the local camping warehouse selling tents and ‘stuff’. I’m a pretty good salesman plus get wonderful staff discounts – which is why I work.
Home is about 50 metres from the beach, so swim every morning, year-round. And I do mean every morning. It usually doesn’t drop below 5 degrees in winter… Plus I’m a member at the local boxing gym and do classes a couple times a week.
Friday evenings I do a radio show, on a community radio station, alternating weekly between a blues show and a neo-jazz show, for 2 hours. Catch me on 5MBS.com – either River Blues (6 to 8 pm) or Café Bijou (8 to 10 pm)
Since retirement, I do miss work and the responsibilities that comes with work. I’m considering seeing if I can follow Millner’s lead and get a part-time lecturing position at the State University. Just a thought!
If you are curious of the ’Hg’ in my name- that is an artefact from working in Singapore, where I was alternatively known as ‘Mr William’ or Hg (which I believe means ‘red’). NO chinaman could pronounce Ehmcke!

Reflections and memories of IMI
I owe you all a massive debt of gratitude. If not for getting out of Adelaide and then Australia, I probably would have become that mass murderer – so indirectly you all have saved my life and many other souls as well. Thank you, and thank you for the enduring friendships over the intervening years.
